Several museum sector capital projects have received regional awards from the Royal Institute of British Architecture (Riba), announced at a series of events across the UK in May.
They will be considered for the Riba national awards, revealed later this month – ultimately leading to the prestigious Stirling Prize, announced in October.
The regional award winners include two projects at the redeveloped St Fagans National Museum of History in south Wales: the restoration and extension by Purcell of the 1976 modernist main building; and Gweithdy, a new building which houses a cafe, craft workshop and gallery, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.
Riba also recognised Battersea Arts Centre, whose 12-year redevelopment was disrupted by fire in 2015 and which now hosts artists’ bedrooms as well as events and exhibitions through the Moving Museum scheme – led by the motto “not for me, not for you, but for us”.

There are more awards in London than any other region, including the South London Gallery’s conversion of a neighbouring former fire station by 6a Architects and Ealing's Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery, which reopened this year after a three-year renovation led by Jestico and Whiles.
Other regional winners include V&A Dundee, St Albans Museum and Gallery, Collective Gallery in Edinburgh and the Weston visitor centre at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
