The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport is welcoming its seventh culture secretary in eight years following a cabinet reshuffle.
Jeremy Wright replaces Matt Hancock in the post, after Hancock was named health secretary.
Wright was elected to parliament in 2005 and has been the Conservative MP for Kenilworth and Southam since 2010. He served as attorney general for England and Wales from 2014 to 2018. His only prior government role was as parliamentary undersecretary for prisons.
Wright’s move is part of the reshuffle sparked by the resignations of David Davis and Boris Johnson from cabinet in protest at prime minister Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal.
A trained lawyer who specialises in criminal law, Wright has little clear experience in the culture, media or digital sectors.
He campaigned for a remain vote in the 2016 EU referendum, and has taken a conservative stance on social issues during his time in parliament.
The appointment is the latest in a number of changes at the top of the department, with Wright becoming May’s third culture secretary.
