Nick Merriman, the director of Manchester Museum, has been appointed the new chief executive of the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London.

He will take up the position in May, succeeding Janet Vitmayer who steps down after 20 years at the helm of the south London museum.

Merriman has led Manchester Museum as director since March 2006. He was previously the director of museums and collections at University College London.

Next year, the Horniman will open a new World Gallery, featuring 3,000 anthropology objects exploring "what it means to be human". The gallery received a £3.3m Heritage Lottery Fund grant and has also raised more than £14,000 through a crowdfunding campaign.

“I have always greatly admired the Horniman for its combination of great collections, wonderful setting, excellent staff, and its ability to connect to wide audiences,” Merriman said. “I'm very much looking forward to moving back to London and building on Janet's great legacy.”

Nick Merriman is speaking at the Museums Association Conference & Exhibition 2017 on 16-18 November in Manchester, and is also a member of the Conference Panel.
