Helen Featherstone has been appointed as the director of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust.

The trust runs three sites – Kelham Island Museum, Shepherd Wheel Workshop and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet – that tell the industrial history of the region.

Featherstone will take up the role in July having worked in the arts and cultural sector for nearly 20 years in arts policy and management.

She joins Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust from Arts Council England, where she holds a national role as senior manager for engagement and audiences, working on a number of strategic funded programmes that work to engage more people in arts and culture.

Her appointment follows the retirement of long-standing chief executive, John Hamshere, in June.

Alex Pettifer, the chair of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust's board of trustees, said: “I’m delighted to announce that Helen will be joining Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust as director.

"With her widely respected creativity and commitment to innovation shown through her portfolio of roles, we are certain Helen has the skills and passion to re-imagine our vision and lead us into the next era to determine the new face of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust.”

Featherstone said: “I’m especially thrilled and excited to be leading the industrial museums at this transformative point in time. Sheffield’s history, industry and the act of making is in the city’s DNA and my aim is to further make the work of the industrial museums relevant and meaningful to people, local communities, and connect with innovation in the city today."
