The Art Fund granted £4.6m to support 160 acquisitions for 65 organisations in 2015-16, according to figures released in its annual report.
These included El Greco’s 1587 work Christ on the Cross, which was acquired by Auckland Castle in Bishops Auckland, and Pretty Much Every Film and Video Work From About 1992 Until Now, by Douglas Gordon, for the Galley of Modern Art in Glasgow.
Last year the Art Fund launched the Moving Image Fund to help bring film and video artworks into public collections. This fund saw Omer Fast’s video work 5,000 Feet is the Best jointly acquired by the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne and Imperial War Museums, while the Towner Art Gallery also jointly acquired Isaac Julien’s Ten Thousand Waves with the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
The Art Fund also invested in individual grants to develop the skills of staff at UK museums and galleries, with 165 museum professionals benefitting from Art Fund schemes. The charity aims to double this support by 2020.
The Art Fund has seen its membership double in the last five years, with over 120,000 National Art Pass holders, although its overall income has fallen from £24.3m in 2014-15 to £14.8m in 2015-16 following receipts of nearly £10m to save the Wedgwood Collection in 2014.
The shortlist for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2016 was announced in April, with the winner due to be announced on 6 July.
