National Galleries Scotland (NGS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Edinburgh, setting out a framework for collaboration between the two organisations, including joint research projects, collaborative exhibitions and the pooling of resources for the study of Scottish art.
NGS is hoping that the agreement will also encourage the university’s 30,000 students to visit the galleries and use its collections.
A spokesman for the galleries said that this was the consolidation of an unofficial partnership going back for years between NGS and the University of Edinburgh.
John Leighton, NGS’s director general, said: “We are thrilled to formalise our long-standing and fruitful association with the University of Edinburgh, further strengthening our ties with one of Scotland’s most distinguished educational institutions.
“NGS looks forward to sharing, with the public, the prosperous results such an official affiliation will bring.”
Timothy O’Shea, the principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, said: “We are looking forward to developing a deeper working partnership with NGS.
“Recent projects between the two institutions have helped to illuminate the galleries’ fantastic collections and added a valuable dimension to the university’s insight and learning.
“I look forward to greater collaboration, which will produce significant benefits for our students, staff and the wider public in years to come.”
Collaborations between museums and universities will be the focus of a news analysis in the April edition of Museums Journal.
