The Institute of Conservation’s (Icon) internship programme is to continue despite the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) ending its financial support.
The HLF kickstarted the programme in 2006 with a £2.45m award, which has so far enabled Icon to fund 101 internships. Another 45 placements were enabled by external funding, which Icon will use to continue its programme.
Susan Bradshaw, the professional development manager at Icon, said: “We’re keeping the momentum going, we don’t want people to think the internship programme is over.”
Icon helps with the recruitment process and an intern adviser oversees each successful candidate. For employers, Icon will provide a breakdown of the costs involved in managing placements.
The success of Icon’s internship programme has meant that 96% of people who undertook them are still employed or enrolled in training courses in the sector.
