China: The French architect Jean Nouvel has announced details of his design for the National Art Museum of China. The 130,000 sq m institution, which will incorporate an internal garden, will be the centrepiece of a museum park on the former Olympics site in Beijing.
France: Bernard Arnault, France’s richest man, launched the Fondation Louis Vuitton museum last month in west Paris. The museum, designed by Frank Gehry, will house contemporary works owned by Arnault and his luxury goods company LVMH. The Musée Picasso also opened in the French capital last month with more than 400 paintings and statues on show across five floors of the 17th-century building.
Spain: Nearly 1,300 works dating from the mid-19th century to the 1950s have gone on show at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, which is dedicated mainly to medieval art. The new display includes works related to the Spanish civil war, many of which were shown alongside Picasso’s Guernica at
the Paris International Exposition in 1937.
US: The Guggenheim Foundation in New York has unveiled plans to build a new space for its collection and staff. The extension will be called the Collection Center and has been described as an “efficient, multi-use building’ by Guggenheim. A competition to find an architect has yet to be announced.
