Belgium: A gunman killed four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels in late May. Prime minister Elio Di Rupo said Belgians were “united and show solidarity in the face of this odious attack on a Jewish cultural site”. The murders were thought to be motivated by antisemitism.
Hong Kong: The M+ museum of visual cultures has acquired Antony Gormley’s Asian Field piece, which comprises 210,000 clay figures, as well as the interior of the Kiyotomo sushi bar in Tokyo, which was designed by Shiro Kuramata in 1988. M+, which has an acquisition budget of about HK$1.3bn, is due to open in late 2017 in the West Kowloon Cultural District.
Saudi Arabia: The government has announced plans to spend $1.7bn on building 230 museums. Construction work has begun on 14 of the institutions, some of which will be co-managed by women, said HRH Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, president of the Saudi commission for tourism and antiquities.
US: The 9/11 Memorial Museum, which opened in May, houses more than 10,000 objects and 23,000 images linked to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The display also includes a controversial film called The Rise of Al Qaeda. The $700m New York museum has been criticised for selling “insensitive” souvenirs such as hoodies
