Belgium: The Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, near Brussels, closed in late November for a three-year refurbishment. The museum, which opened in 1910, has embarked on the €55m renovation in a bid to shake off its dated image and modernise its colonial-era collections and permanent galleries.
France: Bernard Blistène has been appointed as director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at Paris’s Centre Pompidou. Blistène, the director of the cultural development department at the Pompidou, succeeds Alfred Pacquement, who retired last month after 12 years in the post.
Qatar: The Qatar Museums Authority has appointed Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz bin Jassim al-Thani as director of the National Museum of Qatar. Sheikha Amna will oversee the museum’s curatorial and managerial appointments, as well as the education and public programmes. The Doha-based museum, which is scheduled to open late this year, will explore the culture and heritage of Qatar.
South Africa: A major museum of contemporary African art is due to open in Cape Town in 2016. The new institution will house the vast private collection of Jochen Zeitz, the former chairman of the sportswear company Puma. The non-profit institution, named the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), will be 9,500sq m and will be located in the city’s V&A Waterfront area.
South Korea: The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art recently opened a third branch in Seoul, on a former Defence Security Command site. An exhibition featuring 50 contemporary Korean artists inaugurated the museum, which also houses a digital library and eight galleries.
UAE: The French culture minister Aurélie Filippetti has announced that the Louvre Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on Saadiyat Island on 2 December 2015. The director of the Louvre in Paris, Jean-Luc Martinez, said 300 masterpieces
would be loaned to the Emirati museum, which will also incorporate a gallery for 21st-century art.
US: A glass-fronted conservation laboratory costing $2.5m has opened at the Dallas Museum of Art. The museum’s director, Maxwell Anderson, said he planned to build a conservation consortium linking numerous museums with institutions of higher education.
