Egypt: More than 1,000 objects have been looted from the Mallawi Museum in Minia, 190 miles north of Cairo. A 3,500-year-old limestone statue and ancient jewellery were among the stolen and damaged items. The head of museums for the antiquities ministry, Ahmen Sharaf, reportedly said the Muslim Brotherhood was behind the attack.
Finland: The Guggenheim Foundation intends to put forward a new proposal for a branch in Helsinki, after the city’s council rejected the scheme last year because of the projected cost. Richard Armstrong, director of the Guggenheim Foundation, held talks with Finnish municipal and government officials over the summer.
Germany: Contemporary art collector Ingvild Goetz has announced plans to donate her Munich-based museum and 375 works to the state of Bavaria. Goetz will also permanently loan more than 4,000 works to the state. Artists represented in the collection include Tracey Emin, Andreas Gursky and Cindy Sherman.
Turkey: The Vehbi Koç Foundation, established in 1969 by the Koç Holding conglomerate, plans to open a major contemporary art museum in Istanbul. The venue, which is due to open in 2016, will be designed by the London-based Grimshaw Architects. Koç Holding is the principal sponsor of the 13th Istanbul biennial, which runs until 20 October.
Spain: Bartomeu Marí, director of the Museu d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona, has been appointed director of the Barcelona-based International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art. The organisation, which focuses on issues affecting modern and contemporary art institutions worldwide, such as deaccessioning, has 521 members in 78 countries.
US: Glenn Adamson, director of research at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has been appointed director of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. He succeeds Holly Hotchner, who led the institution for almost 17 years.
In 2011, Adamson criticised the museum building, saying that the “galleries are unforgiving in their proportions – too narrow for comfort”.
