France: Manet’s 1863 painting Olympia will this month leave France for the first time. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris is loaning the work, which depicts a courtesan sprawled across a bed, to the Doge’s Palace in Venice, where it will go on show. French president François Hollande has given special dispensation for the work to travel abroad.
France: Facebook shut down the account of the Jeu de Paume photography museum after the Paris-based institution posted a black-and-white photograph of a nude woman by Laure Albin Guillot. The museum’s account was eventually reinstated, though parts of the image were covered with a black bar. Facebook said that it was “sometimes difficult to distinguish between art and pornography”.
Russia: The Manifesta biennial is due to take place next year at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg – the first time the contemporary art exhibition will be held in an eastern European country. The curator of the 10th edition of the biennial, which launched in Rotterdam in 1996, is due to be announced this summer.
UAE: About 130 works from the Louvre Abu Dhabi will go on show in the Birth of a Museum exhibition, which opens this month at the Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition centre on Saadiyat Island (22 April-20 July). Among the works on show will be Picasso’s Portrait of a Lady and Manet’s The Gypsy. The Jean Nouvel-designed Louvre Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open in 2015.
US: The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma) has offered to take over the Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca), Los Angeles. Under the proposed merger, Moca would retain its two locations and its name.
US: The 2,500-year-old Cyrus Cylinder went on show last month at the Arthur M Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC. The clay artefact, on loan from the British Museum in London, is inscribed with a decree by Cyrus the Great after his capture of Babylon in 539BC. The exhibition tour, which travels to New York, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles, is sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation.
