Announced in last week’s budget, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is to receive a further 1% reduction to its budget in both 2013/14 and 2014/15.
This is to be passed directly on to its arms-length bodies, so Arts Council England (ACE) and England’s national museums will receive cuts of 1.09% in 2013/14 and 1.06% in 2014/15.
This is in addition to the 1% cut in 2013/14 and 2% cut in 2014/15 for ACE and the nationals announced in the autumn statement.
Alan Davey, ACE chief executive, said: “We will have no choice but to pass these cuts in our grant-in-aid budget on to the organisation we fund. Once the figures are confirmed we will look closely at them and decide how we will do this.”
A spokeswoman for the National Museum Directors Council said: “This is a total cut of nearly 20% for national museums since the 2010 spending review. All museums are dealing with these cuts in different ways, but it is concerning that this might be death by 1,000 cuts. There is real concern that further cuts may be announced in the next spending review in June.”
The DCMS will also be cutting its own administration budget by 1.09% in 2013/14 and 1.06% in 2014/15, on top of the reductions of more than 50% made since 2010.
