The competition to find the UK City of Culture 2017 has been launched, with a deadline for bids set for the end of April. Derry-Londonderry has now started its year as the first ever UK City of Culture with a programme of events. Those interested in taking up the mantle in 2017 must register on the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s website by the end of this month.


Glasgow Life is examining proposals to relax the restrictions on the Burrell Collection in order to allow it to tour internationally. The terms of the Burrell bequest forbid the 8,000-strong collection from going overseas but the city council is looking at how this might be relaxed if a planned refurbishment of the Burrell Collection goes ahead.


The former site of the National Football Museum in Preston is to be developed to increase the research and storage facilities, and make the collection more accessible. The site closed to the public in 2010, although it is still used as a storage and research centre. The National Football Museum reopened in Urbis, in Manchester, last July.


The North West Fed has reintroduced institutional membership. Benefits include a monthly e-newsletter, access to free networking events, the opportunity to identify key contacts and individuals in the north-west, and to seek professional advice for employees and volunteers.
