Bosnia Herzegovina: The National Museum of Bosnia has closed following disputes between Serb, Croat and Muslim leaders over who should pay its bills. National museums have been under threat as the government, which has no ministry of culture, has refused to pay for their upkeep.
France: A vast new exhibition devoted to surrealist painter Salvador Dalí opened last month at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Visitors enter the show through an egg, which symbolises birth and fertility, and exit through a brain. The exhibition’s sections include “theatricality” and “myth and history”. The event runs until 25 March 2013.
India: The first-ever Indian biennial is set to open this month. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale runs from 12 December until 13 March 2013 in heritage buildings, galleries and disused structures across the Fort Kochi area of Kochi.
Half of the 90 participating artists are Indian and include Subodh Gupta, Sudarshan Shetty and Atul Dodiya. The Pepper House heritage site in Kochi harbour, once used for storing ships’ cargoes, is among the venues being used.
Russia: The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg continues to build its modern and contemporary art collection under the 20/21 initiative with the launch of a room last month devoted to the late conceptual artist Dmitri Prigov. In October, the museum launched an exhibition by UK artists Jake and Dinos Chapman, which runs until 13 January 2013. Rooms devoted to Sol LeWitt and Russian artists, the Kabakovs, are also planned.
Spain: Three major museums in Madrid – the Prado, Reina Sofia and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza – face deep funding cuts as part of the government’s austerity drive. The Prado’s grant will fall from €15.9m this year to €11.2m in 2013, while the Reina Sofia museum will suffer a 25% funding cut.
US: New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has created an online database called MetPublications, made up of almost 650 volumes. The museum aims to offer users a complete catalogue of its entire published works, stretching back to 1870 when the institution was founded. Meanwhile, the Museum of Modern Art in New York plans to open seven days a week from May 2013. The museum is currently closed on Tuesdays.
