The V&A, London, has been granted planning permission for a £41m underground gallery on the west side of the museum, with an entrance from Exhibition Road.
The approved design, by AL_A architects, also includes opening up courtyard space for installations, events, and a café.
The museum has so far raised £25m towards its total of £41m. Building work is expected to begin next year, with completion by the end of 2015, and a public opening in 2016.
The project will see work begin at the site originally intended for Daniel Libeskind’s Spiral, a £70m project shelved in 2004 amid funding concerns.
