Funding for Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums (TWAM) has formally transferred from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to Arts Council England (ACE), it was announced today.
TWAM, which consists of five local authorities and 12 museums and galleries, will receive £5.6m in core funding from ACE over the next three years. The funding will be specifically for the core elements of TWAM’s service, and will be separate from its major partner funding of £4.9m over three years.
Museums Journal reported earlier this year that Sunderland City Council would withdraw from TWAM in April 2013.
Asked whether this would affect the core and major partner funding an arts council spokesman said: “We will work closely with TWAM throughout this year’s notice and will review funding agreements accordingly to make sure that the exciting and innovative work that TWAM delivers will not be impacted if Sunderland Museum does decide to leave the partnership.”
DCMS has stated that it is looking for sponsors for all of its core funded non-national museums by 2014/15.
TWAM’s move to ACE follows the Museum of Science and Industry and the National Coal Mining Museum moving to the Science Museum, and the National Football Museum’s move to Manchester City Council.
Sponsors have yet to be secured for the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London, the Geffrye Museum in London, the People’s History Museum in Manchester, and the Design Museum in London.
