Museums Journal will host two sessions at this year’s Museums Association (MA) conference, focusing on philanthropy and the big society.
The first session, at 2pm on Monday 4 October, will examine whether US-style philanthropy could work in the UK and how regional, as well as national, museums might benefit.
The panel of speakers – Keith Nichol, head of philanthropy and fundraising at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Iain Watson, acting director of Tyne and Wear Museums, Andrew Scott, acting director of the National Museum of Science and Industry, and Verity Haines, national arts director at Arts and Business – will also examine what philanthropists look for in museums and explain how institutions can benefit.
The second Museums Journal session, which takes place on Wednesday 6 October at 9.15am, will look at what the big society means for museum professionals. Phil Redmond, the chairman of the National Museums Liverpool, Jim Forrester, director of Imperial War Museum North, Alan Leighton, the national secretary of Prospect and Bill Ferris, from the Association of Independent Museums, will discuss how the big society represents an opportunity rather than a threat to museums.
Meanwhile, comedian and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig is now a confirmed speaker at the What, no Kylie? conference session at 11am on Tuesday 5 October.
Toksvig, who chaired the National Portrait Gallery’s Gay Icon exhibition selection panel last year, will join other speakers from the museum in discussing how the exhibition went from generating the headline "What no Kylie or Judy?" to being voted number one gay and lesbian hit of the year in Time Out.
