Scottish museum gets £1m
Walter Scott, a Scottish entrepreneur who owned an Edinburgh-based investment management company until 2006, has donated £1m towards the refurbishment of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The £46.4m revamp includes 16 new galleries and education facilities. The museum is scheduled to reopen in summer 2011.
Post museum’s HLF grant
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a first-round pass for a grant of £2.7m (including development funding of £117,800) towards a new £19m home for the British Postal Museum & Archive. A phased opening of the new centre (pictured above), set to be based at the former Great Western Railway Chain Testing Works in Swindon, is planned for 2013.
National Trust initiative
The National Trust and Arts Council England have formed a partnership to strengthen links with the contemporary arts sector. The first initiative, Trust New Art, is a three-year programme of art and craft events at selected historic houses and garden properties across England.
V&A selects architects
Six architectural practices have been shortlisted to design the Victoria and Albert Museum outpost in Dundee. The companies are: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (Vienna); Kengo Kuma & Associates (Tokyo); Rex (New York); Snohetta (Oslo); Steven Holl Architects (New York); and Sutherland Hussey Architects (Edinburgh). The winner will be announced in late summer, with the waterfront centre set to open in 2014.
