Stonehenge collaboration
English Heritage is to collaborate with the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum and the Wiltshire Heritage Museum to present the story of Stonehenge. The two museums will loan items for display in the planned visitor centre at Stonehenge, while English Heritage will help the museums with their displays and develop a coordinated approach to the interpretation of Stonehenge.
HLF grants announced
The Heritage Lottery Fund, has announced an initial £2.3m support to Kettle’s Yard (pictured above) in Cambridge for expansion of its site. Other winners in this round of grants were the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland (£3m) and Roman Maryport in West Cumbria (£3.74m).
Cash for Recognition
Museums Galleries Scotland has secured £750,000 of capital funding from the Scottish government for its Recognised Collections scheme. The scheme recognises 36 collections of national significance across Scotland. Announcements of awards to museums will be made in the spring.
Mining museum on hold
A plan to redevelop Haig Colliery Mining Museum in Cumbria is under threat after a local regeneration company turned down a £3m funding application. More than £2m of public money has already been earmarked for the scheme, including £1.7m from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Museum manager Pamela Telford said the whole project was now at risk. Regeneration firm Energy Coast West Cumbria said the museum was on a reserve list for funding.
