Colchester Borough Council's attempt to raise an extra £7.5m to support the development of the Firstsite visual arts centre has fallen £750,000 short.
Work has started on the project, for which the budget has risen from £17.8m to more than £25m (Museums Journal December 2008, p12).
Essex County Council, Colchester Borough Council and Arts Council England agreed to give an extra £2m each, but the East of England Development Agency will provide only half the £1.5m requested. But council deputy leader Martin Hunt said that in the present economic climate, it should be enough money to complete the project.
