A group of 20 MPs has joined forces to oppose suggestions that the National Football Museum (NFM) should move from Preston to London.
The MPs were reacting to comments made by Football League chairman Brian Mawhinney, who told a meeting of the all-party parliamentary football group last month that more people would be able to see the museum's collection if it were in Wembley Stadium. The NFM is currently next to Championship side Preston North End's Deepdale home.
In December, the 20 MPs, led by Preston MP Mark Hendrick, issued a Commons motion that "deplored" Mawhinney's remarks.
NFM director Kevin Moore said he thought Mawhinney's comments arose from a misunderstanding based on a long-help ambition by Wembley to create a football exhibition at the stadium. Moore said Wembley had approached the NFM for help with the project and he was keen to work in partnership.
The NFM has struggled financially in the past and is trying to persuade various football authorities, including the Football League, to contribute more money.
