Morwellham Quay for sale
Morwellham Quay museum and visitor centre has been put up for sale by its administrators, with a guide price of £1.1m. The museum lost its funding from Devon County Council earlier this year (Museums Journal November 2009, p8). Estate agent King Sturge is inviting sealed bids and statements of intent by 21 January.
Teens are culturally active
A Department for Culture, Media and Sport survey has revealed how much time young people devote to cultural activities each week. Taking Part: The National Survey of Culture, Leisure and Sport discovered that 26 per cent of 5- to 10-year-olds spend more than five hours a week on cultural activities out of school. Surprisingly, 66 per cent of 11- to 15-year-olds participated in more than five hours, both in and out of school.
English Heritage report
English Heritage has published Heritage Counts 2009, the eighth annual report linking the historic environment with social and environmental issues. One of the report's key findings is that adults who live in areas of "higher levels of historic environment are likely to have a stronger sense of place".
MLA publishes guidelines
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has published guidelines to help museums, libraries and archives conduct peer reviews. A spokeswoman said the Light Touch Peer Review Tool "supports improvement, is light on bureaucracy and can be adapted to local circumstance". The facility focuses on areas such as advocacy, professional networks, improvement planning and best practice.
