Haslemere Educational Museum is like a mini British Museum because it has a bit of everything – archaeology, botany, geology, textiles, natural history, paintings and local history.

I have volunteered here since 1990. As a member of both the Embroiderers’ Guild and the Textile Society, I knew there was a need to catalogue the textiles collection here as many items had not been previously described or examined in detail.

Since then, I have catalogued hundreds of items from costumes to household textiles and small fragments. This has often involved some detective work on the provenance of items. I have examined each item in detail and recorded the techniques used in production and other information such as its date.

We recently received an international collection of textiles from Maidstone Museum and opening the boxes to see what was inside was a memorable moment. I was also proud to have been involved in a large exhibition of the European Peasant Arts Collection in 2000, which was well received.

As a retired teacher, I have retained a love of learning and working with people. Volunteering gives me the chance to help promote this splendid museum and continue to acquire knowledge.
