I began volunteering at Ipswich Museum in late 2016 after spotting a few interesting roles on the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service website that offered scope for hands-on, behind-the-scenes experience.
I have helped digitise part of the museum’s extensive archive of artwork and photographs. The process involves scanning each item at a high resolution, taking measurements and cross-checking object information. The items are then repacked for storage. In the case of artwork, the final stage is to upload the scanned images to the Art UK website.
It has been fascinating handling so many incredible pieces of art and discovering more about the artists who produced them. I’m proud to have assisted in a small way on such an ambitious project.
Volunteering with Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service has enabled me to gain a range of relevant skills, including IT and research. It would be fantastic to develop these further with continued volunteering or even a new career opportunity.
Supporting the team at Ipswich Museum has given me a sense of achievement. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and I have become aware of just how much hard work goes on in a dedicated organisation.
