The museum houses around 60 historic vehicles and is owned and managed by the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society. Everyone is a volunteer; there are no paid staff.
We started volunteering in the early 1980s because we needed storage for our own preserved bus, which Paul has known for 70 of his 80 years. We began by wielding brooms and spanners but were soon pitched into management and representational roles.
We served on the board for 12 years – some of those as vice-chairman and company secretary – masterminded two successful Accreditation applications and edited the society magazine.
We are also active in the National Association of Road Transport Museums. Joyce was a board member and also a director of the East Midlands Museums Service for 14 years.
We volunteer because of all the “Ps” – passion for old vehicles, pride in the quality of our work, prejudices about the way museums should be run, the privilege of serving our community and the pleasure of giving enjoyment to thousands of enthusiasts.
We have every intention of continuing to promote the interests – and shout the successes – of independent volunteer-run museums.
