Three years ago, I became the activities and event supporter in the gallery, which is located in the Georgian house that was William Morris’s family home.
On events such as Family Days and Creative Kids we help parents and children complete an artistic activity, while at Late Nights and other adult events – such as lectures and workshops – I help with their setting up and with meeting, greeting and directing visitors.
Looking after two children at home helps with my volunteering as I know what kind of information I would like if I were attending a family event at a gallery. Similarly, my professional experience as an administrator for arts organisations including the Victoria and Albert Museum’s learning and interpretation department has helped me interact with customers and work at events of various sizes aimed at different audiences.
At the Spinning Pots Family Day, children were so excited to use a pottery wheel – my elder daughter treasures the bowl she made – while our Birds of Prey Family Day had more than 700 attendees who were able to hold the birds featured in Jeremy Deller’s film installation. The volunteers were just as excited as the attendees.
