“Walking through the doors of the Barber is like being transported from the streets of Birmingham to the worlds of Monet, Renoir, Rubens, Degas, Gauguin and Picasso in just five galleries.I’ve been volunteering here for three years and it’s the highlight of my week.
I help with the Creative Sundays, which give children aged four to 14 the chance to have fun while learning new skills in drawing, painting, printing and sculpture. I help prepare materials and assist with the practical art activity.
I love helping with the summer art schools that the Barber runs for children and the community days when the entire University of Birmingham and the wider local community are invited to engage with art activities and storytelling in the gallery.
In the past, I have also volunteered in primary schools as a classroom helper and for a year with Action for Children as a disability support worker.
I am studying for a master’s degree in arts and education at Birmingham City University and I am a school governor locally.
My background in fine art and education, my studies and my experience of delivering workshops help to make me a better volunteer as I am knowledgeable about the subject area and keen to expand my experience.”
