“In my previous job, I managed a small team and provided pastoral care for children but, unfortunately, my health deteriorated. The final part of my recovery was to join a workforce again but I must admit I had lost a lot of confidence.

Eventually, I went online and found the Mary Rose Trust, which was looking for volunteers to carry out a number of roles. I was worried about what they’d make of me and if I had the right skills but I received a warm welcome and found some great friends.

I’ve been here four years now. I love it when schools bring children to visit as they create a wonderful atmosphere full of energy, anticipation and excitement.

One of the best experiences has been showing off the costumes from the television series, The Tudors. I loved the show and was excited to talk about the beautiful outfits, some of which were worth a small fortune. I got to wear one of the dresses, which was an absolutely fabulous moment.

However, I don’t think I would have enjoyed being on deck when the ship was in active service. The conditions, smells, danger and sheer hard work would have been too much for me, even though the beer and wine ration doesn’t sound too harsh.”

The article incorrectly stated that the Mary Rose Trust is located in London - it is of course in Portsmouth.
