Brazil: Nine months after fire gutted Rio de Janeiro’s National Museum, staff have recovered more objects than expected from the ruins. The objects salvaged, some of which are in fragments, include Egyptian steles, geological samples and the 12,000-year-old human fossil Luzia.
India: The building that will house New Delhi’s Kiran Nadar Museum of Art will be designed by the British architect David Adjaye. The 6,000-strong collection of contemporary art is currently housed in a shopping mall.
Italy: Christoph Büchel’s work at the Venice Biennale – a fishing boat that capsized in 2015, killing more than 700 Libyan migrants – has been criticised for a lack of explanatory text near the vessel. A spokesperson for the artist said text would “disrupt the process by which questions are raised, assumptions are made, intentions are projected
on to the project, and a meaningful debate ensues”.
Kenya: Planning is under way for a museum of humankind in the Rift Valley. Designed by Daniel Libeskind, the museum will cover evolution, war, overpopulation, disease, biodiversity, climate change and the role of Africa.
US: New York’s American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art will no longer accept gifts from the Sackler family or its foundations. The family faces lawsuits for its alleged role in the opioid crisis.
