Museums across the UK are taking part in the second annual Museums & Wellbeing Week from 6-12 March.

Events taking place include a dance and singing event for people living with dementia and their carers or friends at the Museum of Cannock Chase; Tai Chi at Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool; and audio described tours at Bethlem Museum of the Mind in London.

Laura Bedford, the project coordinator for the National Alliance for Museums, Health and Wellbeing, at University College London (UCL) Culture, said one aim of the week is for museums to showcase and raise awareness of their existing health and wellbeing programmes.

Other museums will pilot new activities, such as Dove College in the Lake District which is holding a family wellbeing day for families.

There are a number of networking and learning events taking place.

In London, a networking event for staff and postgraduate students from UCL and the University of East London, and representatives from community organisations, charities and residents’ groups, aims to find areas of common interest and encourage collaborative working.

And on Thursday 9 March, Hackney Museum and the theatre company Access All Areas will run a workshop exploring how they developed an accessible exhibition on the history of institutionalisation of people with learning disabilities.

The week coincides with the National Alliance for Museums, Health & Wellbeing’s conference at the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds.
