Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales (NMW) has received a funding boost of £275,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery.
The grant will support the museum’s 2017 programme of events, activities and exhibitions, including the upcoming Dinosaur Babies exhibition at National Museum Cardiff.
The museum has been receiving support from the lottery since 2013. A previous grant enabled NMW to create a publicly accessible database, Collections Online, which will feature more than 500,000 records from the museum’s collections.
Due to launch next spring, the database aims to act as a resource for teaching materials, private study, and art and cultural projects.
NMW said it aimed to continue its partnership with the People’s Postcode Lottery, and will use future funding to support its work with visitors, particularly children and young people at risk of exclusion from formal education.
The museum has increased its focus on generating income and building fundraising capacity in recent years in response to public funding cuts. The museum appointed a new director of its development team, Richard Nicholl, earlier this year to spearhead its fundraising efforts.
Nicholl said: “It is no secret that public sector organisations such as ourselves are all facing financial challenges. This is why funding from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery is vital if we are to sustain the level of service and diverse programme our visitors expect from us.”
NMW is currently caught up in a debate with the Welsh government over its future, after ministers put forward a controversial proposal to merge its commercial operations with those of Cadw and other Welsh heritage organisations under a separate executive agency.
