Karen Bradley, the MP for Staffordshire Moorlands, has been appointed secretary of state for culture, media and sport in England after a cabinet reshuffle by the incoming prime minister Theresa May.

Bradley takes over from John Whittingdale at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. She has been parliamentary undersecretary of state (minister for preventing abuse, exploitation and crime) at the Home Office since January 2014, and also served as government whip at HM Treasury.

Before entering parliament in 2010, Bradley worked as a chartered accountant and tax adviser, with positions in Deloitte & Touche and KPMG.

Bradley is the fifth culture secretary to be appointed since the Conservatives were elected to government in 2010.
