Margaret Faull will retire as the managing director of the National Coal Mining Museum for England, near Wakefield, in October after nearly 30 years at the organisation.
She previously worked at the Thwaite Mills Industrial Museum, near Leeds, and as an archaeologist.
"Faull has been central to the enormous success of the museum since its early years as the Yorkshire Mining Museum,” said David Hinchliffe, the chairman of the National Coal Mining Museum’s board of trustees.
“Her appointment at the outset showed the great vision of those establishing the museum and she has successfully led it through many challenges. Achieving national status and now holding major collections and a library of national importance particularly stands out.
“I have long admired Faull as a historian and it has been a privilege to work closely with her over very many years. She leaves with the very best wishes of our board and staff and we are all very grateful to her for her remarkable contribution."
The museum is on shortlist for the Daily Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award 2015.
Faull received an OBE for services to industrial heritage in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2009.
