France: The Musée du Louvre in Paris expects visitor numbers to rise to 12 million by 2025 – a 30% increase on last year. The French government is, meanwhile, considering keeping the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Château de Versailles open seven days a week. The move would boost revenue at a time of government cuts.
Palestine: The Palestinian Museum is to be completed by next September, with a soft opening planned for early 2016. The $19m building, which is in based in Birzeit, has been designed by the Dublin-based architectural firm Heneghan Peng. An online, multimedia timeline of Palestinian history is one of the institution’s key projects.
UAE: More than 300 loans from French museums, due to be sent to the Louvre Abu Dhabi outpost when it opens next year, will come from 13 partners including the Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Centre Pompidou. The loans will be rotated over a 10-year period, with each work remaining in the Gulf for about a year.
US: The US department of justice has abandoned a legal battle to reclaim a 3,200-year-old mummy mask, which is housed at St Louis Art Museum, for the Egyptian government. The museum paid a New York art dealer $499,000 for the mask in 1998. The Egyptian government claims the artefact was discovered in 1952 at the tomb of Ka-Nefer-Nefer.
