Museums in the UK have been encouraged to apply for the European Museum Forum’s awards scheme in 2015, which includes the European Museum of the Year Award (Emya) and a new prize recognising environmental and social sustainability.
The deadline for museums to apply to Emya is 20 June. The award, which recognises innovative organisations that work for the benefit of society, is open to museums that have opened or completed redevelopments in the past three years.
Shirley Collier, the Emya UK judge, said: “We’re looking for museums that put people at the centre of everything they do. We only had one entry from the UK last year, so we’d be delighted to see more UK museums putting themselves forward for 2015.”
Past winners of Emya, including the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2014, have included large and small museums.
The European Museum Forum recognises the value of public engagement in museums, and fosters excellence through a number of awards.
Entrants for Emya will also be considered for the Council of Europe Museum Prize for excellence; the Kenneth Hudson Award, which recognises activities that challenge common perceptions of the role of museums in society; and the Silletto Prize, for work with local communities and volunteers.
In 2015, a special commendation sponsored by a Belgian company, Meyvaert Glass Engineering, will be awarded for museums for social and environmental sustainability.
