The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLH) has awarded £30m to 10 projects in its latest round of funding.

Maritime heritage is a major beneficiary, with three grants going to maritime-related projects.

The ss Great Britain Trust has received initial support of £4.9m for Being Brunel, a major new museum development within the Great Western Steamship Company historic dockyard in Bristol. The new space will give the public access to Brunel’s collections for the first time.

Also in Bristol, the Underfall Boatyard will receive £3m to create a Maritime Centre of Excellence within Bristol Harbour. The project will include opportunities for maritime businesses and training, as well as the conversion of the yard’s former boiler room into a learning centre.

Meanwhile Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has won funding to carry out essential repairs on HMS Warrior, the Royal Navy’s first iron-hulled ship.

In Newcastle, the Hatton Gallery has received funding to help it transform into a major cultural and education resource for the north east, while Highcliffe Castle in Dorset has won a grant towards urgent conservation work.

Disability representation in the south east is set to get a boost after the cultural development body Screen South won funding for Accentuate History of Place, a project to tell the hidden history of disability at sites of historic importance.

HLF's chief executive Carole Souter said: "It’s great news that HLF is able to support such a wide breadth of heritage projects, from protecting our vital insect life to transforming much-loved historic buildings and passing on heritage boat-building skills for future generations."
