Museums and galleries can now apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for grants up to £2m to hold projects marking UK anniversaries and commemorative events.
Last October HLF announced that it would invest £10m in anniversary projects over the next four years. It is now open to applications through three funds – Sharing Heritage £3,000 - £10,000), Our Heritage (£10,000 - £100,000) and Heritage Grants (£100,000 - £2m).
The funding body said the money would be used to ensure that important UK anniversaries could be commemorated and understood by people today. It follows recent celebrations such as the Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012.
Jenny Abramsky, chairwoman of HLF, said: “There are many other key times of celebration or sadness from our past and from the diverse stories of these islands that have left a similar impression. This lottery investment will ensure that these pivotal moments, places or people will not be forgotten by future generations.”
The HLF has highlighted some possible anniversaries that could be supported by this money including: the centenary of Dylan Thomas’ birth in 2014; the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo in 2015; and 50 years since England won the football World Cup in 2016.
In 2012 HLF awarded nearly £900,000 for the four-year Flodden 500 Project commemorating the Battle of Flodden fought on 9 September 1513 on the border between England and Scotland.
It has also funded St Albans Cathedral to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta in 2015, with community events, volunteering opportunities and a display of the Magna Carta at the cathedral.
