Kate Brindley is leaving her post as director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima) to become the interim director of the Arnolfini in Bristol.
Peter Boyden, the chairman of Arnolfini’s trustees, said he was delighted that Brindley had agreed to join the gallery and lead it through its next stage of development: “Her breadth of professional experience, wide range of contacts and deep knowledge of the Bristol cultural scene make her the perfect appointment.”
Before going to Middlesbrough in 2009, Brindley was the director of Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives for four years.
Brindley said today: “I am proud of all we have achieved in Teesside over what has been a very challenging four years, and securing Mima's future with the university is the best legacy I could hope for.”
Museums Journal reported in November that the running of Mima is to be transferred to Teesside University next year, a move that will save the local council £350,000 a year.
Brindley added that she was looking forward to working with colleagues in Bristol. She will take up post on 1 April and replaces Tom Trevor, who has been at the gallery for eight years.
Trevor is leaving to develop a number of international curatorial projects. He said is had been a pleasure to live and work in a city that valued the arts: “I am very proud of the quality of the programme we have been able to deliver.”
