The Network of European Museum Organisations (Nemo) has issued a policy statement saying it wants museums to be recognised for their potential to contribute to the wider social agenda.

The first objective in the statement is to promote the value of museums’ contribution to health, social justice, combating poverty and promoting tolerance.

In the statement, Nemo said it also wanted collections to be widely accessible to all of the public and for museums to be recognised as deliverers of formal and informal learning.

A spokeswomen for Nemo said: “The rethinking of the museum in society must go in both directions: towards politics, but also to the civil society and to cultural operators, making them aware of the discourse and the shifting demands of their communities. This is what the policy document is aiming at.”
