Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery is set to triple in size after it got the green light yesterday to build a new £21m history centre.
The council approved the museum’s application for £3.5m initial funding for the new interactive facility.
The museum hopes the boost will help it secure grants for the remaining funding, and is planning to bid for a £13m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The centre will also house a library and the Plymouth and West Devon record office and is scheduled to open in 2018.
Daventry Museum
Daventry Museum is gearing up to reopen on 14 September after a £125,000 redesign. The volunteer-run museum closed in January this year to facilitate a transformation project that aims to include local people’s memories and portraits in the new displays.
Ditchling Museum
Ditchling Museum in East Sussex is preparing to reopen on 21 September following a £2.3m project to redevelop and expand the building.
The revamp enabled the restoration of the adjacent Grade II listed Cart Lodge, which was previously derelict, to create a new entrance, shop and café. New gallery spaces have also been developed to reinterpret the collection.
In addition to the physical changes, the museum says it has also redefined its focus to place greater emphasis on its arts and crafts heritage.
Jet Age Museum
Last month, the Jet Age Museum in Gloucester opened to the public for the first time in 12 years. The aircraft museum will open temporarily on weekends throughout September to give the public a taster of the new, purpose-built building ahead of its official opening next year.
Fossil Museum
Plans for a new £5m fossil museum on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast also received a boost last month after Purbeck District Council allocated £50,000 funding to the project.
The museum, in the village of Kimmeridge, will replace the existing community hall and will house the Etches collection of over 2,000 clay fossils.
HLF has already funded the project’s development stage and a further bid will be submitted next year.
If successful, the new museum is scheduled to open in February 2016.
