More than 2,000 people applied to Museums Galleries Scotland’s (MGS) paid internship programme, with 20 picked to complete the year-long work placement.
The scheme, which was launched in 2011, provides graduates from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds with the opportunity to undertake paid work-based learning in museums across Scotland.
The 20 successful applicants in 2013-14 will receive tax-free bursaries of £15,000 to support them through their year-long traineeships.
Joanne Orr, chief executive of MGS, said: “Our interns programme is a win-win situation for museums and interns, as it offers a highly effective learning experience for both parties.”
The programme is a sector partnership between MGS and the participating museums, and is supported by a £416,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Skills for the Future programme. Host museums must also contribute £500 towards the overall programme costs.
Colin McLean, head of HLF Scotland, said: “Not only will this opportunity make a difference to the individuals’ lives, but it will help ensure that the future of Scotland’s heritage is in safe and skilled hands.”
The 20 hosts include university, local authority and national museums. National Trust Scotland is also participating. The interns’ roles range from collections care to volunteer coordinator, learning and outreach, and co-production.
A full list of interns and their roles at host museums can be found on the MGS website. This is the second round of the MGS interns programme.
In its first year, there were more than 3,200 applicants for 20 placements. MGS said that 100% of the interns who finished in autumn 2012 went on to secure roles or further study in the sector.
