China: Authorities at the Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the Forbidden City, have banned smoking. The heritage site is visited by 12 million people annually. The new regulation states that “whoever violates the smoke ban will face punishment”.

The New York-based Hasidic Chabad-Lubavitch group is calling for the return of the Schneerson collection of books and manuscripts.
US: A new wing designed by the UK architect David Chipperfield was scheduled to open at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri in June. The $130m expansion, known as the East Building, will increase gallery space by a third. Postwar German art will go on show in the extension, which is mainly underground.
US: The attorney general of Michigan, Bill Schuette, has said the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection cannot be sold by the city to help settle its billion-dollar debt. Schuette said the collection was held in charitable trust and could not “be sold, conveyed or transferred to satisfy city debts or obligations.” The collection, founded in 1885, includes works by Van Gogh and Giovanni Bellini.
US: Television talk show host Oprah Winfrey has donated $12m towards the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is due to open in Washington, DC in late 2015. The museum’s 350-seat theatre will subsequently be named the Oprah Winfrey Theatre. The Gates Foundation has also contributed $10m.
