Last week saw strike action at museums, galleries and heritage sites across England in the latest phase of industrial action over jobs, pay and pensions.
Staff at the National Gallery, Tate in London and Liverpool, National Museums Liverpool and the Imperial War Museum staged a walk out on Thursday, followed by staff at the British Museum and South Kensington’s museums on Friday. Union members at English Heritage sites, including Stonehenge, also went on strike over the weekend.
Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union, said: "These strikes highlight the huge gap between the valuable work our members do and the contempt being shown to them by ministers who are imposing cuts and refusing to even talk to us.”
The strikes are the latest industrial action in a three-month campaign by national museum staff, which have led to some museums closing to the public. As previously reported by Museums Journal, strikes in Scotland caused a drop in visitor figures to the National Museum of Scotland
