MGS publishes delivery plan

MGS formally launches as national development body
Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) has published a delivery plan for the sector, which sets out its strategic goals between now and 2015.

MGS formally launched as the national development body yesterday, with a remit to support museums and galleries in Scotland.

It also published its delivery plan From Strategy to Action, which outlines five priority areas: knowledge and skills development; funding and investment; sector profile, marketing and advocacy; standards and planning for sustainability; and collections and engagement.

The delivery plan was due to be published last year. Joanne Orr, chief executive of MGS, said: “It’s taken us a while to get here but we’re confident that we’ve reflected and distilled the diverse voices and priorities from the sector consultation.”  

Delivery of the priorities will be linked to the national strategy for Scotland’s museums and galleries, which was produced by MGS last year, as well as existing frameworks and forthcoming key performance indicators.

Orr said that the plan aims to enable museums to meet the national stragegy’s objectives while working to their own strengths and priorities.

As part of its new role as the national development body, MGS will now take the plan out to the sector. It is also developing a new business model for 2014/15 following its board voting in March to drop subscription fees after the current financial year.

Douglas Connell, chairman of MGS, said the organisation's launch as the national development body was “a new dawn for the sector”.
