The Public Catalogue Foundation (PCF) has been awarded funding for the creation of a new network of specialist art historians who can be contacted by regional museums for specific, pro bono expertise on their paintings.
The foundation received a grant of £125,000 through the Arts Council England’s (ACE) Strategic Support Fund to set up and run the new service, which will be called the Oil Painting Expert Network (OPEN).
The network will be open to all museums and collections that participated in Your Paintings, the foundation’s initiative to photograph the UK's publicly held painting collections.
The project has so far photographed over 211,000 works in 2,800 participating institutions across the UK.
The PCF hopes the creation of the network will bring a greater understanding of the nation’s oil paintings, as well as reducing the number of orphan works.
The Your Paintings project found that 30,000 of the paintings surveyed had no artist attribution.
