Thieves have stolen lead worth an estimated £70,000 from the roof of Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham.
According to a report in the Rotherham Advertiser, the theft was discovered after staff noticed water leaking into the listed building.
Karl Battersby, strategic director of economic and development services at Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, said: “We are disappointed that thieves have targeted this historic building and caused damage that will cost many thousands of pounds to repair.
“Temporary repair work has been carried out and the museum remains open.
“All councils have a shared interest in preventing heritage crime and the council is in the process of signing up to a new voluntary national network, the Alliance to Reduce Crime against Heritage.
“This will help to reduce the types of crime that cause damage to or interfere with the enjoyment of heritage assets in England.”
Joan Dingle, secretary of the Friends of Clifton Park Museum, said: “It is a lot of money. Things are in progress to lengthen the museum’s life and this is a big setback.”
