Proposed revisions to the national curriculum in England have caused concern among museums, particularly the way in which history will be taught.
As reported by Museums Journal, history will not be compulsory for 14- to 16-year-olds under the proposals. Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils will be taught “the essential chronology of Britain’s history”, such as key dates, events and significant individuals, a move that has been criticised as not encouraging critical thought.
But others say the role of museum educators could become more important if the proposals are approved, with the opportunity for creative learning taking place outside of the classroom.
