A report setting out practical ways for cultural organisations outside London to improve their fundraising capabilities has received a mixed response.
Philanthropy Beyond London, which was written by Birmingham Opera chairman Peter Phillips, is one of three independent studies into philanthropy commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
“The central challenge for organisations away from London is how to emulate the fundraising skills of the most successful ones in London, but with fewer resources to achieve this,” said Phillips.
A report published by Arts & Business showed that private investment in culture outside London amounted to just over £125m, compared with £488m in the capital.
Janet Barnes, chief executive of York Museums Trust, said: “The central challenge for regional cultural organisations is not a lack of the necessary fundraising skills, but a lack of receptive businesses. Most large companies have head offices in London or abroad, and regional offices do not have the authority or access to funds to support cultural organisations that approach them.”
Phillips puts forward 18 recommendations, including targeting individual members to donate more money and trustees being encouraged to give on a regular basis under gift aid.
