Air force museum scheme
The Royal Air Force Museum has announced an apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with Barnet and Southgate College in north London. The scheme is based on motor vehicle repair disciplines, with successful applicants working towards a qualification accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry.
Scottish museum grants
The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, Timespan in Helmsdale and the Gairloch Heritage Museum have been awarded grants by Museums Galleries Scotland under the Iconic Artists in Iconic Places initiative. The £10,967 awarded to the Scottish Fisheries Museum will fund the Home from the Sea project. The awards are funded by Creative Scotland’s Creative Futures programme.
City of Culture funding
The British Council Northern Ireland has announced partnership funding of £250,000 for the Derry-Londonderry City of Culture 2013 festival. An exhibition of 30 works by Northern Irish artist Willie Doherty, with works drawn from the British Council collection, opens in October.
Wales to reject Ebacc
A review commissioned by the Welsh government has recommended that Welsh schools retain GCSEs rather than adopt the new English Baccalaureate Certificate (Ebacc).
Jeff Cuthbert, Wales’ deputy minister for skills, reportedly said that he aimed to respond to the report, which took 14 months to compile, by the end of this month. Museum directors have expressed concerns that the arts will be marginalised by the Ebacc.
